Skills at Library Café Hour In-Person
Overview
The Skills at Library Café Hour is a great opportunity to practice information skills, learn alongside peers, and get instructor feedback. Our team can support you with the key areas listed below, and direct you to further academic skills support available at Essex. We offer this support as a weekly drop-in on Wednesday afternoons (during term time) in the Albert Sloman Library, Colchester Campus. (Online support is offered as 1:1 appointment.)
Key support covered:
- Using the Library & developing information literacy skills
- Creating a search strategy and getting organised
- Finding sources using advanced search techniques
- How to 'unlock' information so it is more accessible
- Best practice for using sources ethically
- How to verify information & check the quality of sources
- Referencing and avoiding academic offenses
- Sharing information inclusively
What to expect:
Café Hour takes place in a shared study space so students can ask questions, complete a Skills at Library activity, or work independently on coursework/assignments. Each week we highlight a different academic skill and provide optional exercises, so even if you don't have a burning question, you can still come along!
How to attend:
Café Hour is offered as a drop-in, so there's no need to book in advance.* You can come along anytime between 15.00-16.00 to get support with your library research.
*If you would like to receive reminder emails and a calendar invite, you can register below.
