The University of Essex Art Collection has been part of campus life since the 1960s. It’s full of modern and contemporary British art, with works displayed across the University so that everyone - students, staff, and visitors - can enjoy them every day. Our spotlight talks focus on individual pieces, sharing the stories behind the artists and their work. Come along to see the collection in a new way, learn something surprising, and discover how art adds inspiration to life at Essex.

Christopher Wood – Mlle Bourgoint 1929
Christopher Wood (1901–1930) trained in Paris and was part of the avant-garde circle around Jean Cocteau. Mlle Bourgoint shows Wood’s interest in portraiture, European modernist style, and the nuanced character of his sitter. Join us to explore his work and its connections to British and Parisian modernism.
