University Art Collection spotlight: Alfred Wallis In-Person
The University of Essex Art Collection has been part of campus life since the 1960s. It’s full of modern and contemporary British art, with works displayed across the University so that everyone - students, staff, and visitors - can enjoy them every day. Our spotlight talks focus on individual pieces, sharing the stories behind the artists and their work. Come along to see the collection in a new way, learn something surprising, and discover how art adds inspiration to life at Essex.
Alfred Wallis (1855–1942) was a self-taught Cornish fisherman whose paintings depict boats and the coast with simple forms and a sense of lived experience. This talk highlights Wallis’ knowledge of maritime life and his influence on artists like Wood and Ben Nicholson. Come and discover Wallis’ approach to seafaring landscapes.
