University Art Collection spotlight: Francisco Goya's 'Los Caprichos' 1797 In-Person

The University of Essex Art Collection has been part of campus life since the 1960s. It’s full of modern and contemporary British art, with works displayed across the University so that everyone - students, staff, and visitors - can enjoy them every day. Our spotlight talks focus on individual pieces, sharing the stories behind the artists and their work. Come along to see the collection in a new way, learn something surprising, and discover how art adds inspiration to life at Essex.

Francisco Goya – Los Caprichos 1881-5 (fifth edition from the original plate, 1797-1799)

Francisco Goya (1746–1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker. Los Caprichos is a series of 80 etchings that satirise Spanish society, exploring fear, superstition, and human behaviour. Join us to see these prints and hear the stories behind Goya’s sharp social commentary.
