Heritage Open Days: Step into History and Discover Special Collections In-Person
This is a rare opportunity to explore the Special Collections at the University of Essex. Located in the Albert Sloman Library, this fascinating archive offers a glimpse into lives, movements, and ideas that reflect Colchester, Essex and the world.
Visitors can enjoy hands-on encounters with materials ranging from the University’s early years, political pamphlets from the Siege of Colchester to personal letters and early printed books. The collections cover a wide range of subjects, including human rights, regional history, and political activism. Highlights include archives of the Mary Whitehouse and the NVALA, the Essex Society of Archaeology and History and the personal library of Colchester-born Samuel Harsnett (1561-1631), who became Archbishop of York (1629-1631).
Find out how we preserve these resources and how they’re used in teaching and research. Whether you're interested in local stories, international issues, or just curious about what’s tucked away behind the library doors, this is a chance to see history in a new light.
Come and uncover the past in unexpected ways.
